This yellowish-green jewel has its roots in Ancient Egypt and across other worlds. The word Peridot comes from the Arabic word ‘Faridat’ which translates to the word ‘gem.’
Where does this mysterious Peridot come from?
You can find the Peridot in the deepest ends of Earth or outer space! Peridot is formed deep inside Earth and is brought to the surface by volcanic eruptions. There are certain kind of ‘extra-terrestrial’ Peridots that are found embedded in meteorites such as pallasite meteors. These intra-planet stones are olive-green in colour and are incredibly rare. Peridots have a gorgeous lime green colour and can be quite pricey because of the way they are mines.
Gem of the Sun
The origin of the Peridot is very interesting. Found on the island of Topazios in the Red Sea, now known as St. John’s Island or Zabargad, this gemstone was almost impossible to mine. Why? Legend says the entire island was crawling with snakes which made the craft difficult. It is only when the ingenious Pharoah found a way to rid the snake-infested island of the serpents, did the mining flourish.
Ancient Egyptians called the Peridot the ‘Gem of the Sun.’ Associated with light, Peridot was believed to ward off evil spirits and ‘terrors of the night.’ Over the years many have heralded the stone, so much so that some historians believe Cleopatra’s famous collection of Emeralds could have actually been Peridots!
