There is a Greek legend about the Amethyst that goes like this:
In Ancient Greece there lived a young virgin who rebuffed the advances of a drunk Dionysus, the Greek God of wine and pleasure. As he prepared to incur his wrath over her, she prayed to the virgin Goddess Artemis who turned her into a piece of stone. As Dionysus lamented over his actions, he poured wine over the stone giving it its purple colour and the ability to strip off intoxication.
There are many versions of the above story. Regardless, today the word Amethyst comes from the Greek word ‘Amethystos’ where ‘a’ means ‘not and’‘methysko’ means ‘intoxicate.’
Greco-Romans took this legend to heart and crafted jewellery, amulets, goblets, and chalices out of Amethyst to keep negative energies and the ill effects of wine away.
